Who Gets Melasma?

Melasma Treatment in Bangalore

Melasma is typically more common in dark-skinned women than in men and can occur in anyone between the age of 20-40 years.

What Triggers Melasma?

The pigmentation is caused due to the overproduction of melanin by the pigment cells that are triggered due to the causes like

● Hormonal changes- Hormones are a well-known cause of melasma. Estrogen, which has higher levels during a female’s menstrual period, increases the level of the precursor of melasma active metabolites. Estrogen also increases the amount of a melanin-forming enzyme, tyrosinase, found in their bodies.

● Severe temperature changes along with Sun exposure- One of the most common triggers for melasma is sun exposure, such as UV rays of the sun.

● Hereditary- Melasma can be triggered by one or more inherited genetic factors. Studies have shown that around half of women with Melasma have a sibling affected with Melasma.

● Pregnancy- Pregnant women are more prone to get Melasma. When Melasma appears in pregnant women, it is called chloasma, or the mask of pregnancy.

● Hypothyroidism

● Cosmetics- Skincare products that irritate the skin might worsen Melasma.

Signs and Symptoms of Melasma:

The primary symptom of Melasma is the symmetrical patches of dark brown or grayish skin with irregular borders. Other medical symptoms include an increase in the number and enlargement of melanocytes and abnormal accumulation of elastic tissue. and an increase in blood vessels in the face.

Common signs of Melasma are brown or gray-brown patches on the face, sometimes on the forearms or neck, and sometimes causes irritation. These patches most commonly appear on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, above the upper lip, and chin. Melasma is often associated with the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. It is common in pregnant women, women taking birth control pills (oral contraceptives), and women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause.

How to Diagnose and Treat Melasma?

Because melasma is very common and has a characteristic appearance on the face, most patients can be diagnosed or treated simply by a skin examination with a Woods lamp. At irregular intervals or every now and then, a skin biopsy is necessary to differentiate melasma from other conditions. Depending on the exact cause, the best treatment for Melasma includes:

Chemical peels– It helps to remove discolored patches on the skin while at the same time promoting new skin growth. After the first treatment session, patients start to see improvement in the skin’s appearance and texture.

● Microdermabrasion

● Medications

● Photofacial-QsNDYAG lasers

At the Vitals Skin and Hair Clinic in Bangalore, we encourage the best and most effective treatments after a thorough assessment. We use a combination of these procedures to get the best outcome. At our clinic, we perform all of these procedures by qualified dermatologists.

When can I see the results of the Melasma treatment?

Multiple treatments are required to see substantial improvement, but you must follow the prescribed guidelines of our dermatologists to minimize the recurrence. This is very important to people with melasma.

How much time does melasma treatment take for the procedure?

It takes around 30-45min. Immediately after treatment, you can resume your office or can go back home because as such there is no downtime after those treatments.

When shall be my next session?

It is 15 days once the procedure and can be done any time after 15 days of the previous session.

How Much Does Melasma Treatment Cost?

The cost of melasma treatment depends on your individual needs and the methods you choose for treatment.

Causes of Melasma/Skin Spots/Pigmentation

It normally occurs when the color-making cells in the skin (melanocytes) produce too much color. People with skin of color are more prone to Melasma because they have more active melanocytes than those with light skin.

The main causes of Melasma Treatment are:

Sun exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun stimulates the melanocytes.

A change in hormones: Pregnant women are more prone to get Melasma. When Melasma appears in pregnant women, it is called chloasma, or the mask of pregnancy. Birth control pills and internal secretion medication can trigger Chloasma.

Cosmetics: Skincare products that irritate the skin might worsen Melasma.

Prevention for Melasma

It is not possible all cases of Melasma can be cleared up with treatment. However, there are things you can do to minimize the appearance of the discoloration which include:

  • Wearing sunscreen with SPF 30
  • Taking prescribed medication by doctors.
  • Wearing protective clothing from sunshine.

Melasma is a skin disorder where the skin starts to lose its color causing the appearance of white patches on the skin. Treatment for melasma helps in restoring skin color in affected areas but it does not help in preventing continued loss of pigments or the recurrence of it.
